What to expect
Initial assessment
An initial assessment is often the appointment that you will attend before deciding to commence therapy. Each therapist has their own way of starting therapy but this first session should always cover:
- Introduction
- Confidentiality and disclosures
- Assessment
- Contract and boundaries
Your therapist will spend a few minutes introducing themselves and explaining how they work. They will make sure that you feel comfortable enough and try to cover anything you’re not sure about.
During your first session you will discuss confidentiality and agree on the limits of it for your work together. Protecting a client’s confidentiality and privacy is essential for building the therapeutic safe space and trust.
Your therapist will gather information about your reason for attending counselling and relevant history. They might want you to complete some forms or assessment measures relating to the presenting symptoms for the purpose of gathering additional information and to develop a better understanding of your problems and difficulties. It is important that you feel you have had the opportunity to tell the therapist about what is troubling you.
You shall also discuss the contract that will cover dates and times of therapy sessions, how and when you can contact each other, limits of confidentiality and the nature of the therapeutic relationship. Our contract is available for you below.
At the end of the appointment you will discuss together the information gathered and whether therapy would be beneficial for you, by discussing treatment options. You will also have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have during this appointment. This first session is important for making sure that you feel comfortable with your therapist and their way of working. You should expect initial assessment to last approximately 90 minutes.
