„Making therapy
culturally sensitive”

About Psi Therapy

The idea of our practice came to life when we recognised the unique benefits of providing more accessible and culturally sensitive therapeutic support to all people in Northern Ireland. Our experience as counsellors and coming from different cultural backgrounds inspired us to work towards the shared goal of creating a more tailored approach to therapy.

We both trained in Psychology back in our countries of origin and the idea of using the Greek letter Psi, to represent our brand was close to our hearts and interests, as it is often used to symbolise psychology.

The story of the symbol involves some mythology and the fascinating evolution of the term “Psi” (Ψ).
This symbol was transliterated by Roman Empire’s influence to the word ‘’psyche’’ which meant ‘’butterfly’’ in Latin and was a symbol for the ‘’breath of life, a breeze, a life-giving wind’.

Little by little the word ended up symbolising the ‘’human soul’’.
The term ‘therapy’ is widely used in Medical and Psychological fields.

In our work context we use it to refer to the talking therapies, psychological treatments for mental health and emotional wellbeing issues like stress, anxiety or depression.
Psi Therapy joins together the idea of human healing by creating professional, safe and confidential space within the context of psychological theories.

More about me and my qualifications:

For over 20 years I have worked professionally in human health professional field. During the last 10 years of my therapeutic practice, working in different supporting and counselling settings in Northern Ireland, I tailor and master my therapeutic skills and have obtained Foundation Degree in Counselling, CBT, and EMDR Training. Organisations I worked and volunteered for are: Cruse Bereavement care, Contact NI, Lifeline and CANS Counselling All Nations Services,

In my current work for CANS–I am broadening my experience of working with clients from diverse backgrounds, cultures and languages using my 3 languages, English, Latvian and Russian. Increasing post-traumatic presentations in counselling settings has developed my interest in Trauma work and completed additional training in this area. In 2016 I completed EMDR training, which is powerful therapeutic approach that helps people affected by traumatic events in their lives.

Out of this work experiences I adapted my skills development and effective practice in risk assessment and risk management, I learned to identify and work effectively with the stages of grieving and developed my empathy and capacity to work with and contain painful emotions.

In 5 years working experience in medical settings, I was facing with and supporting people who were suffering - physically and psychologically. During this time, I observed how the physical conditions can make impact on people’s psychological wellbeing and reverse, unresolved psychological issues can lead to their physical health deterioration and to the specific medical conditions. This experience led me to underpin my genuine interest in human psychology and study Psychology to Master degree level for the next 6 years.

Prior to my graduation in 2001 I was employed as a Psychologist by Latvian Police Department in residential placement for children and young offenders.
In1992 as a medical school student my first work placement was at the Surgical A&E department, and after that continued as a qualified medical attendant in a Transport Department’s first-aid and ambulatory medicine branch.

How I work

My initial degree in Psychology and experience working with people from different cultural backgrounds has underpinned my work and ignited my interest in psychotherapy and EMDR that is powerful therapeutic approach that helps people recover from problems triggered by traumatic events in their lives.

The approach that I use in my practice is the Integrative one which takes the components from CBT, EMDR, Person-centred & Psychodynamic skills to provide tailor therapy in a way which is bespoke for my clients and meets their individual needs.

At the centre of my approach is the emphasis on forming a sound therapeutic relationship with my client. This is a relationship where the client is the focus and where they can be supported in a safe space to grow in their understanding of themselves and their issues. The understanding includes how they are affected in the here and now every-day life, as well as what is the possible origin of the difficulty. This way we are able to look closer on some unhealthy patterns of thinking or behaving that does not help my clients to live a fulfilled life. By building this awareness they can facilitate the change of unhealthy patterns of behaving and thinking, as well as patterns of relating to others and make better choices for themselves in the future.

In my area of interest is Psychodynamic approach to personality, developed by Otto F. Kernberg and heavily influenced by psychodynamic object relations theory.
